You will be part of the Flow Controls division in Houston, which develops solutions for applications found in general industrial, oil & gas, power generation, and pulp and paper applications. Daily, you will be responsible for inspecting welds and parts coming from our welding and machine shop, as well as incoming purchased components. Attention to detail will be critical, as will strong communication and interpersonal skills to work with team members throughout the organization. You will inspect a wide array of valve products including globe, control, gate, butterfly, ball, and surge relief valves, from respected brands including M&J Valve, DeZurik, and Copes-Vulcan.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Quality Control Supervisor, you will be responsible for performing visual and precision instrument inspection of manufactured parts and/or specialized inspections such as surface plate work, non-destructive examination (NDE), for compliance with specified requirements. Additionally, you will inspect welds to applicable codes and standards.

In performing your work, you will interact with multiple internal departments including Manufacturing, Sales, Engineering, Purchasing, Quality, Accounting, and Shipping/Receiving. You may also work with external contractors. Daily workflow is assigned by the Quality Control Supervisor and/or based on project demands and is informally reviewed through daily observation. In addition, you will have annual formal performance reviews. Specifically, you will:

• Perform visual, mechanical and/or non-destructive examination of purchased or manufactured parts, either in process or finished, to determine if the parts conform to specifications, drawings, designated codes and standards.
• Inspect welds as applicable to welding codes and standards.
• Select the proper welding procedure application for the material to be welded.
• Use precision measuring and testing equipment, including surface plate, to perform mechanical inspections.
• Determine whether or not products or materials conform to specifications and recommending whether the nonconforming item should be reworked, repaired, returned to the vendor or scrapped.
• Prepare a Non-Conformance Report (NCR) for any part that does not meet specified requirements and processing it per established procedures.
• Enter data in the Inspector’s Transaction Activity Log associated with the parts received, inspected and rejected.
• Manage documentation flow including recorded heat numbers and vendor certifications.
• Witness internal testing procedures to verify the accuracy of results.
• Interpret and execute an Inspector Test Plan (ITP).
• Interface with third-party inspectors to verify completion of required customer requests.
• Handle other assigned functions as deemed necessary and appropriate by your immediate supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

• Knowledge of manufacturing processes and techniques, test equipment and procedures, and assembly applications.
• Ability to disassemble valves and provide dimensional inspection of vendor-provided parts.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
• Ability to use hand and power tools.
• Strong computer skills including experience with ERP systems, such as SAP, JDE or similar, and MS Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Knowledge of the valve industry is highly preferred.
• Ability to work in a team-oriented environment that is fast-paced and demanding.
• Strict attention to detail.
• Self-directed with excellent initiative; ability to prioritize effectively.
• Proven ability to handle multiple demands with a sense of urgency, drive and energy.
• Ability to work under stress and deliver to deadlines on-time.
• Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong organization and prioritization skills.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• A high school diploma or GED equivalent.
• 3 years of inspection experience in a manufacturing environment.
• CWI, NDE and/or MAG certification preferred.

You will work in a shop environment where you may be exposed to noise, dirt and dust. You may also be exposed to smoke, shop noise, grinding dust, welding sparks and welding flash. You will wear SPX provided personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
