Keys to Success
If you're looking for a position in which you can simply tick items on an EHS checklist, this is not the job for you. To excel in this role you will be a change agent motivated to transform the organization. A collaborative, partnering approach will serve you well, but you can't be shy. For the most part, you will find people open to positive change, but it still can be challenging. You'll definitely need the influencing skills to persuade others to buy in, and at times you may need to be assertive. In just about any position you would be expected to assume ownership and accountability, and that is certainly true here. What's a little different is that you also will be promoting shared ownership and accountability. It may be tempting, when someone else isn't taking action, to step in and handle it yourself in order to get it done. And people will have the mindset that, if it's EHS, it's your job. However, you'll need to resist that temptation, help people embrace the ownership, and coach them in getting the job done.
In addition, in order to be an outstanding EHS Manager, you will:
- Combine analytical skills with creativity in solving problems.
- Remain flexible and adaptable -- a black-and-white approach won't work well.
- Maintain open lines of communication between and among stakeholders.
- Bring a customer service approach to supporting the plant staff.
- Keep a constant eye out for ways to improve process efficiencies.
- Achieve goals independently and also contribute effectively as a team member.
- Hold yourself to high standards, and encourage others to do the same.
